In today’s world, our planet needs environmental sustainability and the use of energy responsibly. With climate change and a looming energy crisis, the theme "Our Power, Our Planet" invites students and teachers to explore possible solutions to preserve the Earth for future generations. This theme emphasizes the connection between energy, environmental impact, and the urgent need for innovative solutions. The middle school science teachers, Ms. Janice Doyle (grades 6 & 8) and Ms. Bing Racadio (grade 7), organized a Science Fair to nurture a mindset of analytical thinking and to discover scientific knowledge among the students.
Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a day after the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, the middle school students gathered in the gymnasium to present their scientific discoveries to the teacher-judge. A short program was held to start the event. Ms. Bing Racadio led the opening prayer while the STEM Head, Mr. Ed Solis, welcomed everyone to the event. The teacher judges were Mr. Ed Solis and Ms. Victoria Santiago for grade six, Ms. Janice Doyle and Mr. Isaac Matere for grade seven, and Mr. Ian Crisostomo and Ms. Yvonne Lee for grade eight.
The theme "Our Power, Our Planet" is in congruence with the Earth Day theme for 2025. It offers a timely opportunity for students to get involved and make a difference for our planet, not just on this day but every day. This is a way for DIS to join the millions of people worldwide in Earth Day activities. By focusing on power and energy, environmental impact, and sustainability, the students are not only learning about science and technology but also contributing to the broader conversation about how we can build a better future. Their discoveries at the event gave inspiration not only to their peers but also to their communities and teachers to think more critically about the way we interact with the planet.
Moreover, the theme reinforces the concept that every individual has a role in protecting the environment. By fostering creativity and a deep understanding of the intersection between energy and the environment, "Our Power, Our Planet" encourages young minds to think about how science and technology can solve some of the world’s most urgent problems.
It is truly inspiring seeing young minds like yours gathered here, excited to explore the wonders of science and showcase the incredible research you’ve worked on. This exhibits creativity, curiosity, and the spirit of discovery. Each of the research/projects you will see represents hard work and dedication. As we begin, I encourage you all to explore and support each other in this journey of knowledge. You never know – some of the ideas you’ll see today could be tomorrow’s breakthroughs. Let’s enjoy this exciting day together and celebrate the amazing potential of science. This is your moment, middle school, shine, shine, shine.
The emcee of the event was Brandon Yu from Grade 8 St. Agnes class. He thanked the following personalities: Directress/Principal Sr. Jacqueline C. Manuel, OP and the Dominican sisters of the community, Vice Principal Sr. Rosa Dabhi, CCV, Academics and Curriculu, Coordinator Mr. Joe Schoeman, Activities Coordinator Ms. Agosh Librea, Discipline Officers Mr. Tank Tien and Ms. Rebecca Wu, Middle School science teachers Ms. Janice Doyle and Ms. Bing Racadio, the Middle School Teachers and Students, the judges and the MIT Department.
The event is more than just an opportunity for students to showcase their scientific knowledge and creativity. It’s an invitation for them to take part in shaping a future where power and consumption are in harmony with the planet’s well-being. Through innovation and a commitment to sustainability, we have the power to address the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. The projects resulting from this theme will not only provide solutions but also inspire a generation of young people to be stewards of both our planet and our power.
