D’ Torch Chapter of NJSC launched

LLast April 26, 2018, the D’ Torch Chapter of National Junior Honor Society was launched and had its induction ceremony. The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle-level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

Sr. Ma. Zenaida T. Ancheta, OP, Directress / Principal of DIS initiated the D’ Torch Chapter since the school has just received its accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The Five main purpose of having chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter. Sr. Zenaida chose Mr. Elliott Wakeling to be the chapter adviser since he is homeroom teacher in one of the G8 classes and teaches G8 Language Arts.

The induction ceremony started at 4:00 PM at the newly constructed auditorium located in the basement of the new building. It formally recognizes those students who have been selected by the faculty of DIS for successfully completing their candidacy and are being inducted as new members of our NJHS chapter.

The new members were inducted by the chapter president, Silva Lin of G7 Bl. Jordan of Saxony, the Principal Sr. Ma. Zenaida T. Nandita Chennakrishnan and I Ciao "Tonia" Pao both from G7 St. Thomas of Aquinas represented service and leadership respectively. Each presenter lighted a candle to symbolize the formal induction ceremony. It indicates the continuing emphasis on Dominican value that we represent for the school and community. Throughout the year, members of the Middle School D’ Torch chapter will serve as role models for other students.
